Check Engine Light On?

Don’t guess. We scan it with professional equipment, follow the factory diagnostic charts, and check for service bulletins and recalls before we recommend a repair.

A code is not a diagnosis

Anyone can plug in a cheap code reader and get a number. That number is only a starting point. It tells us which system set a warning — it does not tell us which part to replace.

At Robbins Auto Service we treat the check engine light as a diagnostic process, not a parts-guessing game. Bill and the team use professional-grade scan tools (including Autel Ultra), then follow the manufacturer’s factory diagnostic charts the same way a dealership would.

How we diagnose it

1. Professional scan We pull stored and pending codes, freeze-frame data, and live sensor readings — not just the generic code a parts-store scanner shows.
2. Factory diagnostic charts We follow the OEM troubleshooting trees for your year, make, and model so the next test is the right test — not a random parts swap.
3. Service bulletins and recalls Before we recommend a repair, we check technical service bulletins (TSBs) and open recalls. Sometimes the factory already knows about a pattern and has a specified fix.
4. Confirm, then repair We explain what we found in plain language, give you options that fit the vehicle and your budget, and only replace what the diagnosis supports.

When you should come in

Why this matters

Guessing from a code wastes money. A P0420 “catalyst” code is not always a converter. A misfire code is not always a coil. Following the factory charts and checking bulletins and recalls first is how we keep repairs honest and keep you from buying parts you do not need.

That is the same approach we use on every diagnostic job in our 7-bay shop at 8541 OH-73 in Hillsboro — ASE Master Certified technicians, current service information, and a 12-month / 12,000-mile warranty on the repair.
